How to Become a Canadian Citizen: Complete 2026 Guide

Step-by-step guide to becoming a Canadian citizen in 2026. Eligibility, application process, test preparation, and ceremony details.

Becoming a Canadian citizen is one of the most significant milestones in an immigrant's journey. This guide walks you through every step of the process — from checking your eligibility to taking the Oath of Citizenship.

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

Before you apply, make sure you meet these requirements:

  • Permanent Resident Status: You must be a permanent resident (PR) of Canada.
  • Physical Presence: You must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (3 years) in the 5 years before your application.
  • Tax Filing: You must have filed Canadian income taxes for at least 3 of the 5 tax years before applying.
  • Language Skills: If you are 18–54, you need adequate proficiency in English or French (CLB/NCLC Level 4 or higher).
  • No Prohibitions: No criminal convictions or removal orders that bar citizenship.
  • Not sure if you qualify? Use our Eligibility Calculator to check instantly.

    Step 2: Gather Your Documents

    You will need:

  • Permanent resident card (front and back copies)
  • Passport or travel documents
  • Two passport-style photos
  • Proof of language proficiency (if applicable)
  • Tax returns (Notices of Assessment) for at least 3 years
  • Canadian travel history for the past 5 years
  • Step 3: Submit Your Application Online

Since 2020, IRCC accepts online applications:

  • Create an account on the IRCC portal
  • Fill out the application form (CIT 0002)
  • Upload all required documents
  • Pay the application fee ($630 CAD for adults)
  • Submit and receive your Acknowledgement of Receipt
  • Step 4: Wait for Processing

Current processing time is approximately 12–18 months. During this period:

  • IRCC verifies your identity and residency
  • A criminal background check is performed
  • Your documents are reviewed
  • You can check your application status online through your IRCC account. Learn more about processing times.

Step 5: Take the Citizenship Test

If you are between 18 and 54, you will be invited to take the citizenship knowledge test:

  • Format: 20 multiple-choice questions
  • Time: 45 minutes
  • Pass Mark: 75% (15 out of 20)
  • Source: All questions come from "Discover Canada"
  • Mode: Usually taken online from home
  • The best way to prepare is to study Discover Canada and take practice tests. We recommend at least 10 full mock exams before your real test.

Step 6: Attend the Citizenship Ceremony

After passing the test, you will be invited to a citizenship ceremony — either in person or virtually. During the ceremony:

  • You take the Oath of Citizenship
  • You receive your citizenship certificate
  • You are officially a Canadian citizen
  • The oath is: "I swear (or affirm) that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to His Majesty King Charles the Third, King of Canada, His Heirs and Successors, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada, including the Constitution, which recognizes and affirms the Aboriginal and treaty rights of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, and fulfil my duties as a Canadian citizen."
