Application Steps
Check Your Eligibility
You must be a permanent resident (PR) who has lived in Canada for at least 1,095 days in the past 5 years. Use our eligibility calculator to check if you qualify.
Gather Your Documents
You need: PR card, travel documents (passport), language proof (if applicable), tax returns for 3 years, and 2 photos meeting IRCC specifications.
Complete the Application
Fill out the application form on the IRCC website. Answer all questions accurately. Include details about your residence history, travel, and employment.
Pay the Fee
The fee is $630 CAD for adults ($530 processing + $100 right of citizenship). Pay online with credit card or debit when submitting your application.
Submit and Wait
After submission, IRCC processes your application. You'll receive an Acknowledgement of Receipt (AOR) confirming they received it. Processing typically takes 12–18 months.
Take the Citizenship Test
If you're 18–54, you'll be invited to take the citizenship test. It has 20 multiple-choice questions about Canada. Use our free practice tests to prepare.
Attend the Ceremony
After passing the test, you'll be invited to a citizenship ceremony where you take the Oath of Citizenship and receive your certificate. You are now a Canadian citizen.
Eligibility Requirements
Permanent Resident Status
You must be a permanent resident of Canada.
Physical Presence
At least 1,095 days (3 years) of physical presence in Canada within the 5 years before applying.
Tax Filing
You must have filed Canadian income tax returns for at least 3 years within the 5-year period.
Language Skills
Adequate knowledge of English or French (CLB/NCLC Level 4 or higher for ages 18–54).
Knowledge of Canada
Pass the citizenship test (ages 18–54). The test covers Canadian history, government, rights, and geography.
No Prohibitions
No criminal prohibitions, no removal orders, and no pending criminal charges that would affect eligibility.
