Is le test de citoyenneté canadienne Online or In-Person in 2026?
Find out whether the test de citoyenneté canadienne is taken online or in person in 2026. Locations, formats, and what to expect.
As of 2026, the standard Canadian test de citoyenneté is taken in person at an IRCC office. While there have been pilot programs for online testing, the vast majority of applicants take the test at a physical location.
Where Do You Take the Test?
IRCC has test centres in major cities across Canada. You'll receive a letter telling you exactly where and when to go. The location is usually determined by your home address.
Can You Choose Your Test Centre?
No. IRCC assigns you a test centre based on your address. If you have a valid reason why you can't attend the assigned centre, you can contact IRCC to request a change, but this isn't guaranteed.
What About Online Testing?
IRCC has piloted virtual testing for some applicants, particularly during and after COVID-19. However, this is not widely available. Unless your invitation letter specifically says your test is online, assume it's in person.
Paper or Computer?
Even within in-person testing, the format varies. Some centres use paper (bubble sheets), others use computers. Both have the same 20 questions and 30-minute time limit.
