How to Prepare for the Test

By Citizenship Test Editorial Team·8 min read·Updated 2026-05-01

Proven strategies for preparing for and passing the Canadian citizenship test on your first attempt.

Preparing for the Canadian citizenship test does not require months of studying. With the right approach, most people can be fully prepared in 1-3 weeks. Here is a proven preparation strategy.

The Study Guide

Your primary resource is "Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship" — the official study guide published by IRCC. Every question on the test comes from this guide.

The guide is 68 pages divided into 10 chapters. It is available for free on the IRCC website.

Recommended Study Plan

Week 1: Read and Understand

  • Read "Discover Canada" cover to cover
  • Take notes on key facts, dates, and names
  • Do not try to memorise everything — focus on understanding
  • Week 2: Chapter-by-Chapter Practice

  • Take chapter tests for each of the 10 chapters
  • Focus extra time on chapters where you score below 80%
  • Re-read sections of the study guide for topics you find difficult
  • Week 3: Simulation Tests

  • Take at least 5 full simulation tests
  • Practise under timed conditions (30 minutes)
  • Review every incorrect answer and understand why
  • Continue until you consistently score 85%+
  • Study Tips

  • Study in short sessions — 30-60 minutes is more effective than hours at a time
  • Test yourself often — Active recall (testing) is far more effective than passive reading
  • Focus on weak areas — Spend more time on chapters where you score lowest
  • Use the explanations — After each practice question, read the explanation even if you got it right
  • Study on your phone — Use commute time, lunch breaks, and waiting time productively
  • Do not cram — Spread your studying over at least a week for better retention
  • When You Are Ready

You are ready for the real test when you can consistently score 85%+ on simulation tests. Aim for 90%+ for maximum confidence.
