By Sarah Chen·7 min read·Updated 2026-05-15

Everything that's changed about the Canadian citizenship test in 2026. New processing times, format updates, and policy changes.

Here's what's changed about the Canadian citizenship test and process in 2026.

Processing Times

IRCC has been working to reduce processing times. As of 2026:

  • Standard processing: 12–18 months from application to ceremony
  • Some cases are processed faster through initiatives to reduce backlogs
  • Online applications are processed faster than paper applications
  • Test Format

The core test format remains the same:

  • 20 multiple-choice questions
  • 30 minutes
  • 75% passing score
  • Based on Discover Canada
  • Recent Policy Changes

    Digital Applications

IRCC continues to expand its online application system, making it easier to submit documents digitally.

    Ceremony Formats

Both in-person and virtual ceremonies continue to be available. Virtual ceremonies have become a permanent option since their introduction during COVID-19.

    Language Requirements

The language proficiency requirements remain the same. CLB/NCLC level 4 is the minimum standard.

    Looking Ahead

IRCC regularly updates its processes. For the most current information, check the official IRCC website or follow our blog for updates.

    Your Preparation Shouldn't Change

Regardless of policy changes, the test content hasn't changed. Discover Canada is still the sole source material. Our practice tests stay up to date with any content changes.
