What Happens If You Fail the Canadian Citizenship Test? (All 3 Attempts)

If you fail the Canadian citizenship test, you get up to 3 attempts. Here is exactly what happens after each failure and how to prepare for your next try.

Failing the citizenship test feels disappointing, but it is not the end of the road. IRCC gives you up to **three attempts** to pass. Here is exactly what happens after each attempt and how to prepare for the next one.

After Your First Failure

  • IRCC schedules a second test, usually within 4–8 weeks
  • You do not need to submit a new application or pay any additional fees
  • You receive an email with your new test date
  • Use the time between tests to study the specific topics you struggled with
  • How to Prepare for Attempt 2

  • Identify which questions you got wrong (you will not see the exact questions, but you should know which topics felt difficult)
  • Focus your studying on those specific chapters
  • Take chapter practice tests for your weak areas
  • Take at least 3 full simulation tests before your second attempt
  • Aim for 18+/20 on practice tests before the real thing
  • After Your Second Failure

  • IRCC may schedule a third test or an interview with a citizenship officer
  • An interview is a verbal test where an officer asks you questions about Canada
  • The interview covers the same material as the written test
  • Some people find the interview format easier because they can explain their reasoning
  • After Your Third Failure

  • If you fail all three attempts, IRCC will refuse your citizenship application
  • You can reapply for citizenship and start the process again
  • There is no limit on how many times you can reapply
  • Consider taking a citizenship preparation class through a local settlement agency
  • Important: Most People Pass on the Second Try

The statistics are encouraging. The vast majority of people who fail once pass on their second attempt. The key is targeted studying — focusing on the specific areas where you were weak, rather than trying to re-study everything from scratch.
